    The Hollywood Foreign Press has announced the list of contenders for the 73rd annual Golden Globe Awards on December 10. The event is scheduled to take place on January 10. Carol, the romantic drama film directed by Todd Haynes is leading the board.

    ‘Carol’, starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, is expected to turn big winners as the period drama has won five nominations, including two under the name of the lead actors. The film will compete against ‘Spotlight’, ‘The Revenant’, ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ and ‘Room’ for best motion picture drama. Second spot in the list is shared by ‘The Revenant’, ‘The Big Short’ and ‘Steve Jobs’ with four nominations each.

    In the world of television, there isn’t any clear lead. With three nominations each, ‘American Crime’, ‘Fargo’, ‘Mr. Robot’, ‘Outlander’, ‘Transparent’ and ‘Wolf Hall’ stand at the same spot. Netflix is leading the race, grabbing eight nominations, followed by cable channels HBO, Starz and Amazon with five nominations each. 

    List of nominations in prominent categories is as follows-

    Best motion picture (drama):

    ‘Carol’, ‘Spotlight’, ‘The Revenant’, ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ and ‘Room’

    Best motion picture (comedy/musical):

    Joy’, ‘The Martian’, ‘Trainwreck’, ‘The Big Short’ and ‘Spy’.

    Best actor in a motion picture (drama):

    Leonardo DiCaprio for ‘The Revenant’, Eddie Redmayne for ‘The Danish Girl’, Michael Fassbender for ‘Steve Jobs’, Will Smith for ‘Concussion’ and Bryan Cranston for ‘Trumbo’.

    Best actor in a motion picture (comedy/musical):

    Matt Damon for ‘The Martian’, Steve Carell for ‘The Big Short’, Al Pacino for ‘Danny Collins’, Mark Ruffalo for ‘Infinitely Polar Bear’ and Christian Bale for  ‘The Big Short’.

    Best actress in a motion picture (drama):

    Brie Larson for ‘Room’, Saoirse Ronan for ‘Brooklyn’, Cate Blanchett for ‘Carol’, Alicia Vikander for ‘The Danish Girl’ and Rooney Mara for ‘Carol’.

    Best actress in a motion picture (comedy/musical):

    Jennifer Lawrence for ‘Joy’, Amy Schumer for ‘Trainwreck’, Lily Tomlin for ‘Grandma’, Melissa McCarthy for ‘Spy’ and Maggie Smith for ‘The Lady in the Van’.

    Best director (motion picture):

    Ridley Scott for ‘The Martian’, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu for ‘The Revenant’, Tom McCarthy for ‘Spotlight’, Todd Haynes for ‘Carol’ and George Miller for ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’.
