Minions, the cute little creatures, which are loved by all, first featured in 2010 release Despicable Me. Since then, these animated characters have become favourites of all. Speaking a language of their own world, their visual method of communication has captured the attention all over the world.

Chris Melendandri , the producer of the film, recently discussed how these characters were evolved. He shared, “Our starting point was a question that we get asked all the time, which is, ‘Where did the Minions come from, and what was their life like before Gru? So that essentially became their origin story. But the idea of tackling a film where your three main characters do not speak a language that audiences understand was formidable from the outset”.

The producer further added that their aim from the starting was to reach audiences globally and hence the team thought that they “should design the complexion of our creative team to resemble the breadth of the audience that we’re trying to reach”. He further explained that the inspiration to voice these 3 main minion characters was derived from silent comedians and several other non-verbal cartoon characters. “In animation, what’s wonderful is that when you start to work with multiple nationalities, the common language becomes a visual language, rather than a spoken language, which blends beautifully with the art form”, Melendandri added.
