Christopher Nolan Explains Why He Used Real Locations For Dunkirk

Dark Knight franchise director Christopher Nolan is known for his meticulousness in filmmaking, among other things. After quite some time, the director has now come out with his war based film titled ‘Dunkirk’ and judging by the recently released trailer, he has left no stone unturned. The director shot the film in the real location of Dunkirk, France, to give the story the authenticity it needed.

With the release of the film just around the corner, Christopher spoke about shooting in the real location and explained why he did so. “At first, we didn't necessarily think we were going to shoot there and we did explore other possibilities. But seeing the reality of the place and the unique quality of its geography made it inevitable that we would film there, whatever the challenges might be. So we just dove in”, the director shared.

In 1940, a massive military evacuation was carried out in Dunkirk where more than 335,000 soldiers were rescued. The movie stars Tom Hardy, Fionn Whitehead, Damien Bonnard, Tom Glynn-Carney and Harry Styles, among others. It will hit theatres this Friday, July 21.
