Disney's upcoming live-action reboot of the 1992 animated classic 'Aladdin’ has been counter blasted by people for roping in an non-Arab actress for playing the role of Jasmine. Disney and director Guy Ritchie took nearly a month for finding actors to play Jasmine and Aladdin. They auditioned around 2,000 actors from all over the world for the roles.

After a month long search, the makers finally zeroed in down on actress Naomi Scott to play Jasmine in the film. Scott is of British and Indian origin. Mena Massoud, who is of Egyptian descent, has been cast as Aladdin.

The story of Aladdin revolves around rough-and-tumble kid who lives on streets. He develops love for Princess Jasmine and therefore seeks help of a genie to win her. The flick is set in fictional Agrabah, which is largely seen as representing a Middle Eastern city.

The studio made official announcement on Twitter. “Mena Massoud announced as Aladdin, Naomi Scott as Jasmine, and Will Smith as Genie in live-action Aladdin! #D23Expo,” tweeted the studio. Naomi was last seen in the Power Rangers reboot. She has appeared in The 33, Lemonade Mouth, and Terra Nova.
