Following the announcement made by Warner Bros. regarding the shift in release dates for ‘Godzilla 2’, Gareth Edwards, the director of the original 2014 film, has left the project. According to a source, the reason for Gareth’s departure was that he wanted to take up smaller projects. He is also busy with ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ which will be releasing on December 16.

Rogue One is currently in the post-production stage and focuses on the events that took place before ‘Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope’. It stars Felicity Jones, Mads Mikkelsen, Genevieve O'Reilly and Ben Mendelsohn. Coming back to the monsterverse, the director’s ‘Godzilla’ was a success at the box office, bringing in $529 million worldwide.

Initially, Warner Bros. had announced that the sequel, ‘Godzilla 2’, will be released on June 8, 2018 but it was postponed to March 22, 2019. Last year, Legendary revealed that Mothra, Rodan and Ghidorah will be present in the sequel. The studios have made no announcement regarding who would helm the project, now that Gareth has stepped down.
