The details about the plot of the book have been closely protected, although the writer David Lagercrantz has hinted that the book’s theme includes hacking and corruption. This is the first book, which will be published after the death of Stieg Larsson, who died of a heart attack in 2004.

While Larsson’s partner objected upon continuing the book series after the death of her husband, but Sonny Mehta spoke in Lagercrantz’s defence by saying, "David Lagercrantz's familiarity and understanding of Stieg's work as a journalist, coupled with his appreciation Stieg's work as a novelist, made him the perfect candidate to continue working on the Millennium series, and it is evident on every page of this extraordinary thriller".
