Gravity remains unbeatable in its 3rd week while The Fifth Estate emerges as a flop show

It was a powerful third week for George Clooney-Sandra Bullock starrer Gravity as the 3D space epic ruled the box-office with $31 million collection. On the other hand Benedict Cumberbatch-starrer The Fifth Estate bombed at the box-office with a meagre opening collection of $1.7 million from 1,769 theatres.

Gravity has defeated the new releases like horror thriller Carrie, Syllvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Escape Plan and the WikiLeaks drama The Fifth Estate with full strength. After its debut on Oct. 4, Gravity has grossed $170 millionin the domestic front andmore than $250 million worldwide so far. Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros. executive vice-president of domestic distribution, stated, “People have clearly gotten the message that 3D and Imax absolutely enhance the experience of seeing this movie.”

But as the box-office numbers reveal, there was hardly any audience for Cumberbatch’s Julian Assange in The Fifth Estate and the figures led it to become the worst debut for a film opening in this year. Quite ironically the Cumberbatch-starrer was considered as an Oscar contender at one point of time but its insignificant reception would be truly heartbreaking for the makers.Disney’s head of distribution Dave Hollis said, “We’re disappointed.” “The talent and the whole team worked very hard on this, so it’s a letdown,” he added.
