Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock’s The Heat attracted women movie-lovers the most and the female viewers helped the movie defeat Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx’s White House Down at this weekend’s box-office.

But none of them were capable of beating Disney’s Monsters University as it retained its topmost position at the box-office numbers. The Heat opened to a better-than-expected $40 million but could not overpower the sequel to Monsters Inc. which estimated $46 million as a total of three days. Since its opening last week, Monsters University has collected $171 million and has crossed the $300 million markglobally.Fox’s head of distribution Chris Aronson told The Wrap on The Heat’s unexpected success, “We had a lot of confidence in this movie and it’s great to see it borne out.” He said more on that,“We marketed it almost solely to women and it worked.”

On the other handWhite House Down was not up to scratch as it could collect only $25.7 million, lagging behind World War Z. It has been the second flop of this summer for Sony post its failure with Will Smith’s After Earth. Now Sony will be pinning all their hopes on Grown Ups 2 and Elysium which have already created a lot of buzz till date. But Sony is still hopeful about the film as told by a spokesperson, "We couldn't be more proud or supportive of the film Roland, Channing and Jamie created. This weekend's launch is just the beginning. WhileWhite House Downopened in a few smaller countries this weekend, it will not begin to open in major overseas territories until mid-July and it will continue to roll out overseas well into the fall.” In its second week Brad Pitt's zombie thriller World War Z managed to take in $30 million and the other contender Man of Steel added $20.8 million more to its numbers. Warner Bros.' Superman flick also crossed the $500 million mark at the international box office with the latest collections.
