It’s official: Brie Larson To Play Captain Marvel

Actress Brie Larson will play Captain Marvel, aka Carol Danvers, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con presentation. Brie was previously rumoured to suit up as Captain Marvel when reports that she was in talks to take on the role emerged last month.

Speaking to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige after the Hall H panel on Friday, reporters asked what it is about Larson that helped her land the role. "The first casting choice as our own studio was Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark," Feige says. "We set a bar that was very very high. Every time we bring somebody, whether or not it's a co-starring role, certainly if it's a starring role, we need to match that bar if it's even possible. With Carol Danvers, with our first title female super hero in Captain Marvel we could do no less than that," he added.

Larson won the Best Actress Academy Award this year for her performance in Room. She was on stage earlier in the day promoting the upcoming King Kong film Kong: Skull Island. Guardians of the Galaxy writer Nicole Perlman and Inside Out's Meg LeFauve are co-writing the screenplay. No director has been announced. Captain Marvel will be the first film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to centre on a female character. The film is scheduled for release in March of 2019.
