James Cameron Looking Towards A Terminator Franchise Re-launch?

In 1984, a sci-fi film titled ‘Terminator’ hit the scene with its sort of out of the box story line, which was highly appreciated by the audiences. Directed by James Cameron, the movie starred Arnold Schwarzenegger and went on to become the actor and director's big break. Till now, the franchise has seen five instalments with the last one,‘Genisys’, which released in 2015. Now, Cameron has revealed that he is considering re-launching the franchise.

Talking about reinventing the franchise, the director shared, “The question is - has the franchise run its course or can it be freshened up? Can it still have relevance now where so much of our world is catching up to what was science fiction in the first two films. We live in a world of predator drones and surveillance and big data and emergent AI (artificial intelligence)”. He added that discussions are currently going on with David Ellison, who currently holds the rights for the Terminator films, about what direction the franchise can take.

Over the years, the franchise has shifted ownership several times. But, some of the rights will revert back to Cameron in 2019 under US copyright law. The first Terminator film brought in $78 million with the sequels bringing in $519 million, $433 million, $371 million and $440 million worldwide.
