The Writers Guild Festival was recently held at Pickford Center, California where Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn shared some insight on his journey as a screen writer. James, who is also directing ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’, shared some details about the upcoming project and also gave some advice to aspiring writers and directors. The director stated that he had a lot more freedom while making the sequel, compared to the original 2014 flick.

“On the second movie I had a lot more freedom. Because the first movie did well and it was great not having to explain the five major characters to the audience in the first half hour, we just go straight into the story”, James shared. Talking about one of the characters in the flick – Rocket Raccoon – James revealed that he connects most to this character. He added that Rocket has anger issues that he has, along with the same inability to accept love.

The Slither director also spoke about his process when starting a new project. Covering all the bases is very important to Gunn. He feels that while making a sequel, the movie should “be its own thing and you can’t start making this a sh—y Xerox of the first one”.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will bring back the gang of rag tag superheroes including Chris Pratt as Peter Quill, Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax and Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket Raccoon. The movie will hit theatres on May 5.
