'Kung Fu Panda 3' gets new release date

'Kung Fu Panda 3' gets new release date

Dreamworks Animation has pushed the release date of Kung Fu Panda 3 to March 18, 2016 from its original Dec. 23, 2015 release date. According to sources, the release date was moved since Star Wars: The Force Awakensis expected to take over the box office that month with its Dec. 18, 2015 release. Dreamworks Animation has had plans in the works to reconfigure their release schedule after Marvel’s announcement of a 10-film release schedule through 2019.

There's no doubt that "Kung Fu Panda" and its sequel were serious box office draws: starring Jack Black, Angelina Jolie and Dustin Hoffman, the first made $630m on a $100m budget, the second achieved $665m on $150m; both became the highest grossing animated films of their respective years. Dreamworks Animation’s next film, Home, is slated for a March 27, 2015 release, while their other film, B.O.O.: Bureau of Otherwordly Operations, is set to shift from its original June 5 date due to its competition from the next Avengers sequel, and has yet to be announced.
