After 2008’s ‘Filth and Wisdom’ and 2011’s ‘W.E.’, singer-actress-director Madonna will once again wield the microphone for ‘Taking Flight’. The movie is based on the life of ballerina Michaela DePrince. Madonna has based the flick on the ballerina’s memoir titled ‘Taking Flight: From War Orphan to Star Ballerina’.

Madonna feels that she can relate to Michaela’s journey, both as an artist and an activist. In a statement published by The Hollywood Reporter, Madonna said, “Michaela’s journey resonated with me deeply as both an artist and an activist who understands adversity. We have a unique opportunity to shed light on Sierra Leone and let Michaela be the voice for all the orphaned children she grew up beside. I am honored to bring her story to life”. For a very long time, Madonna has been quite active in standing up for equality for the LGBTQ community and has also shown her support for various AIDS awareness campaigns.

Michaela DePrince is a Sierra Leonean-American ballet dancer who rose to fame with the 2011 documentary ‘First Position’. She grew up as an orphan in Sierra Leone and faced immense hardships till she was adopted by Elaine and Charles DePrince in 1999 and taken to the U.S. Michaela trained as a ballet dancer and after a lot of struggle because of her being black and having vitiligo, she was cast in ‘First Position’.
