Mary Poppins Sequel Adds Meryl Streep To Cast

Meryl Streep has reportedly joined the cast of the upcoming movie Mary Poppins Returns! The three-time Oscar awardee will play the role of Topsy, Mary’s cousin, a role omitted in the 1964 classic. Also, the 67-year-old actress will sing momentous pieces in the film, according to Hollywood news site Variety. Rob Marshall, who directed the Into the Woods movie, is set to direct the upcoming sequel.

Disney’s official synopsis for Mary Poppins Returns reads: Blunt has been cast as Mary Poppins and Miranda will play a new character, a street lamplighter named Jack. Drawing from the wealth of material in P.L. Travers’ seven additional novels, the story will take place in Depression-era London (when the books were originally written) and follows a now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, who, along with Michael’s three children, are visited by the enigmatic Mary Poppins following a personal loss. Through her unique magical skills, and with the aid of her friend Jack, she helps the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives.

Streep will reunite once again with Blunt, director Rob Marshall and producers Marc Platt and John DeLuca, whom she worked with in the 2014 musical Into the Woods, E! Online reported. Both actresses co-starred in the 2006 film The Devil Wears Prada. All seven novels of Mary Poppins were authored by P.L. Travers in 1934. The original Disney film adaption, which bagged five Academy awards and was first shown in August 1964, paved Andrews’ career to ultimate stardom. Rob Marshall, who directed the Into the Woods movie, is set to direct the upcoming sequel. Disney announced that Mary Poppins Returns will hit theatres on Christmas Day, 2018 with Emily Blunt wielding the famous umbrella as Poppins herself.
