Minecraft is joining the gang of Warcraft, Assassin's Creed, and Angry Birds as the latest video game series to get its very own movie. Minecraft has sold more than 23 million copies since the game launched in 2009. Plot details remain under cover.

According to Mojang, the movie will be released on May 24th, 2019 in 3D and IMAX formats. That’s an incredibly long wait for a movie about a game that launched in 2011, “Yes, that might seem like a long time away, but it just so happens to be the right amount of time to make it completely awesome,” Mojang COO Vu Bui wrote. “And we all want an awesome Minecraft movie, right?”

The Minecraft movie will be directed by ‘It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ co-creator and star Rob McElhenney (he of Mac fame). Warner Bros. is producing the film with and The Lego Movie producer Roy Lee is involved.

Earlier this year, Producer Roy Lee said, “Minecraft would be part of a multiverse where humans can enter that has the feel of what the live-action version of a Minecraft experience,” and they’re going for “the same target audience as Jurassic World.”
