With the second biggest animated film opening in history, ‘Minions’ has topped the domestic box office with a whopping $115.2 million over the weekend. In 2007, Shrek The Third set a record with a $121.6 million opening. The production value of Minions was $74 million.

Minions also beat Jurassic World’s opening collection, pushing it to number 2 on the list. According to Bloomberg’s article, Universal Studios has invested more than $600 million in promoting and publicising ‘Minions’. Universal’s domestic distribution chief, Nick Carpou said, “I’m not sure the public is mindful of what films cost; they’re more concerned with how they resonate”.

Adhering to the family fun aspect, the flick saw a crowd with 55% under the age of 25, 59% female, and 60% of the people were with their families. The Pixar film ‘Inside Out’ (with a total of $283 million) is now at number 3 followed by Terminator Genisys ($68 million). Also released last week, ‘The Gallows’ took the fifth spot with an opening of $10 million.
