Oscars viewership this year was the least in last 6 years

The just concluded Oscar ceremony on Sunday evening was surprisingly the least watched Academy event in the last 6 years. The fall from the last year’s successful Oscar evening was as huge as 16 percent.

According to a survey conducted by Neilson, this year’s Academy awards viewership was around 36.6 million while last year’s event had the largest viewership of 43.7 million. This year’s host Neil Patrick Harris has in fact faced a lot of criticism for not being able to pull off blinder of a show. While his hosting has been under the hammer, there are quite a few reasons the viewership might have gone down.

Most popular of movies this year were not in contention of the recognitions since Birdman and Whiplash dominated the evening which to be honest were not the most popular fun films of the year. American Sniper which could have been this year’s Wolf of Wall Street was only restricted to one minor award. The event unarguably was dull, plain and unexciting. It was too long for the viewers to enjoy which could have played a factor. The boycott by the large black community may also have an aspect since the evening was mostly dominated by the whites. Let the introspection go on for a while.
