    The 63-year-old writer and director of independent films, including the Academy Award-winning Still Alice, Richard Glatzer, breathed his last on Tuesday after a four-year battle with A.L.S. The public relations firm Block Korenbrot confirmed the news today.

    Diagnosed in 2011 with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, the pair took on the project of "Still Alice" in a very early stage of Glatzer's disease. After his A.L.S. diagnosis in 2011, Glatzer felt compelled to continue his work as a filmmaker and storyteller. Richard met Westmoreland in 1995. The couple collaborated on four films as co-writers and directors, including the 2006 Sundance Grand Jury Prize and Audience winner "Quinceanera."
