Director Sam Taylor-Johnson had a dispute with E.L. James, the author of the novel Fifty Shades of Grey, while she was working on its film adaptation. However, the director said that it is still unclear to her as to why the author did not like her. She further expressed of not working with her in the future.

"I like everyone, and I get really confused when they don't like me. I was so confused by E.L. James. I don't understand when I can't navigate a person, when there's no synergy,” said Sam.

She said that she would never watch the sequels as she doesn’t have any interest in them. However, the filmmaker said that she was shocked when she was approach to direct the film but was then later drawn to the 'dysfunctional fairy tale'. "It felt like a very dysfunctional fairy tale: a controlling prince and an unsuspecting young village girl. What I wanted to achieve is (for her) to usurp him against the odds," she said.
