Move Over Gangnam Style, This Is YouTube's Most Played Song

Psy’s Gangnam Style (released in 2012) is no more the video with the highest views on YouTube.

It was the most watched YouTube video for the last five years. It had managed to break YouTube’s play counter, going beyond the highest possible number of views (2,147,483,647), due to which the company had to rewrite its code.

Now, it’s has been replaced by another music video - Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth’s See You Again (released in 2015). The soul stirring ballad has now been viewed 2,895,373,709 times; beating Psy’s present count of 2,894,426,475 views.

If you add this up, it means that See You Again has played for 21,759 years. The song had been written for Furious 7, and was played during the closing credits in tribute to the late Paul Walker, who passed away in a car crash before the movie had been completed.

See You Again is regularly played at funerals in the UK and was the best-selling song globally in 2015. It got the best song nominations both at the Grammys and the Oscars.

The last scene of Furious 7 is played in the music video, which features the two chief characters Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and Brian O’Conner (Cody Walker, replacing his brother, Paul), driving side by side, smiling at each other after which they drive onto different paths. The camera then focuses on the sky and ‘For Paul’ is written, after which the video ends.

The video got 1 billion views in six months, and reached 2 billion last September. However, its spot as the most watched YouTube video may not last long.

Luis Fonsi’s Despacito (released in 2017) has got 2.5 billion views in six months, and is going strong.

It is a Puerto Rican song sung in Spanish and English and has been the number one song in UK for the past eight weeks. Adding to the popularity of the song is a remix featuring Justin Bieber.

The winner in this whole game seems to be Universal Music, since they owns all these songs.
