Disney-Marvel’s first release this fall, Thor: The Dark World, has been like a thunderstorm at this weekend’s box-office as it has grossed $180.1 million overseas including its estimated collection of $86.1 million from domestic theatres. Quite obviously it was the No. 1 at the U.S. box-office this weekend.
The momentum of last year’s The Avengers and this year’s Iron Man 3 has been carried forward by Thor quite successfully. As the total global count has been estimated as $327 million after its massive business last week, Thor: The Dark World, is on its track to surpass its predecessor which grossed nearly $450 million worldwide during summer 2011. Disney distribution topper Dave Hollis told, “The Marvel guys have done something even within the last three years unrivaled in the industry, achieving the consistency of great films, as well as box office success.”

He added, “It’s a great blessing to have these characters and the Marvel brand as part of the Disney family.” Among the other releases, Universal’s time travel rom-com About Time earned a modest $5.2 million domestically and $38 million internationally after it expanded to 1,200 stateside locations. Fox Searchlight’s slavery drama 12 Years a Slave grossed $6.6 million which brought its North American total to $17.3 million. 20th Century Fox’s The Book Thief’s limited release led to an estimated $27,000 from just four locations in New York and L.A. The Book Thief is an adaptation of Markus Zusak’s 2007 bestseller based on Nazi Germany.
