President Barack Obama will be awarding Tom Hanks, Robert De Niro, Robert Redford, Ellen DeGeneres and several other celebrities the Presidential Medal of Freedom. It is the nation’s highest civilian honour. It is recognition for the contributions that these individuals have made to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace and their cultural endeavours.

President Obama spoke about the Medal of Freedom and said, “From scientists, philanthropists, and public servants to activists, athletes, and artists, these 21 individuals have helped push America forward, inspiring millions of people around the world along the way”. The presentation will be hosted at the White House on November 22. It signifies that any individual, no matter what the origin, has the opportunity to make a positive change in the country and the world.

Diana Ross, Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jordan, Bill and Melinda Gates and Cicely Tyson also made the list. Last year, Steven Spielberg, Barbra Streisand, Emilio and Gloria Estefan and Itzhak Perlman were some of the recipients of the Medal of Freedom. The honorary medal was established by President Harry S. Truman in 1945.
