Tom Hardy Talks About His Character In Taboo

The Revenant actor Tom Hardy was recently present at the Television Critics Association winter press tour where he spoke to the reporters about his TV show ‘Taboo’. Tom shared some insight on the origins of the show and revealed that his character has been inspired by Oliver Twist, Heart of Darkness and Jack the Ripper. The show made a debut on FX on Tuesday night.

After Hardy had played Sikes in a production of ‘Oliver Twist’, he wanted to put the character in a gentleman’s body. “And what if you put a bit of Marlow in “Heart of Darkness” in there? And maybe, ‘also he could have some Jack the Ripper.’ And my father said, ‘Tom, will you just close the door on your way out, I’m trying to finish my novel”, he added, talking about the origin of the character.

This is how ‘Taboo’ came to life. Hardy then took the show to Steven Knight who added the needed darkness to the apeal of the series which is based in the early 1800s. Show runners Knight, Hardy and director Kristoffer Nyholm plan on building a world around a set of characters in the initial episodes.

With the first episode airing on January 7, the second will debut on January 14.
