Great news for Gears of War fans! Universal Pictures is developing a movie based on the video game by Microsoft and The Coalition. Following the trend of video game adaptations, Gears of War will be joining the likes of Tomb Raider, Warcraft, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Silent Hill and the upcoming Assassin’s Creed film. The Gears of War movie was announced during a live stream for the upcoming Gears of War 4 game.

Rod Fergusson, studio head of game developer at The Coalition shared, “As a way to support the franchise the next logical step was to make the movie. We’d done comics and novels in the past but the opportunity to work with Universal to bring the movie to life was perfect”. The project will be produced by Scott Stuber and Dylan Clark.

Fergusson also shared that some of the video game based movies have failed in the past because the filmmakers tried to make the films for gamers, who have really high expectations. Appreciating Universal, the studio head added, “We’re finding that line where we can say it has enough lore and canon that it feels genuine to the game while at the same time going beyond that and asking ‘OK what makes a great movie?’”. He also stated that the game has a rcih history which can make for a great cinematic story.

Gears of War 4 will be released on October 11 and will be an Xbox One exclusive.
