Ali Zafar threatens to file defamation suit against Meesha Shafi, jam session video leaks

Pakistani actor-singer Ali Zafar has demanded that Meesha Shafi should apologise for accusing him of sexual misconduct, failing which he will file a defamation suit amounting to Rs 100 crore against her, Pakistani news channel Geo TV reported . On April 19, Shafi had accused Zafar of sexual harassment in a Twitter post. A few hours later, Zafar had posted his denial of all claims made by the 36-year-old singer.

According to a report in Geo News, Ali has sought an apology from Meesha, failing which he has asked for “damages to the tune of at least Rs 100 crore” under Pakistan’s Defamation Ordinance.

The report quoted the notice seeking “an apology using the same social media platform of Twitter proclaiming our client’s innocence. However, if you fail to delete the tweet and issue an apology based on Twitter within 14 days of receipt of the legal notice, we have definite instructions from our client to seek remedy for redressal of his grievance and claim damages to the tune of at least Rs 100 crores.”

Meanwhile, a new leaked video, claiming to be from a jam session where Meesha was allegedly assaulted, has surfaced online. Meesha and Ali are seen jamming, preparing for a concert, in presence of several artists. And India Today report quoted a source talking about the video as saying, “This was in the presence of her manager, Ali’s manager, the event planner and 9 band members.”

Meesha had written on Twitter on Friday, “I have been subjected to sexual harassment of a physical nature at the hands of a colleague from my industry: Ali Zafar. These incidences did not happen when I was young or just entering the industry. This happened to be despite the fact that I am an empowered, accomplished woman who is known for speaking her mind! This happened to me as a mother of two children.”

Replying to Meesha’s allegations, Ali had written on Twitter, “I categorically deny any and all claims of harassment lodged against me by Ms Shafi. I intend to take this through the courts of law and to address this professionally and seriously rather than to lodge any allegations here, contesting personal vendetta on social media and in turn disrespecting the movement, my family, the industry and fans. Ultimately, I am a strong believer that the truth, always prevails.”

After Meesha, more women came forward and shared similar experiences. A make-up artist thanked the original accuser for being brave enough to speak out and wrote, “Seeing (the original accuser)’s courage it’s impossible for me to not speak now, not only in support of her but also to say she’s not alone. In the many years I have known Ali, he has on several occasions crossed boundaries of what is appropriate behaviour between friends.”

Two women who had worked with Zafar in the past spoke in his defence.
