Malayalam Actor Jagannatha Varma Passed Away

Malayalam Actor Jagannatha Varma Passed Away

K.N. Jagannatha Varma, a retired Superintendent of Police who became an accomplished Kathakali artist, a percussionist and finally a popular character actor, died today at 77. He breathed his last at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram. Varma was hospitalized here with pneumonia few days back.

Jagannatha was recruited in the Kerala Police force in 1963 and retired as an SP. His passion for acting made him an avid actor who portrayed a variety of roles in nearly 600 films. He debuted in 1978 with A. Bhim Singh’s ‘Mattoly’. His keen interest in acting can be estimated with his presence on stage even at his early 70s. He once said, “I just wanted to act, that was my passion. I did not care whether the film was good or bad or mainstream or parallel.”

Varma was last seen in a 2013 Malayalam drama film ‘Dolls’, directed by Shalil Kallur. This veteran actor is survived by his wife Santha, son Manu Varma, who is a famous television personality, and daughter Priya, who is married to Mollywood director Viji Thampi. Desimartini expresses its deepest condolences to the grieving family.
