BAFTA 2016: Leonardo DiCaprio Won The Best Actor Award For 'The Revenant'

BAFTA 2016: Leonardo DiCaprio Won The Best Actor Award For 'The Revenant'

British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards were held on 14th February 2016 and Leonardo DiCaprio starring 'The Revenant' dominated the award night. The wilderness drama won a total of five awards including the award for best film, best director, and best actor. This is the first big BAFTA win for actor Leonardo DiCaprio.

DiCaprio has been nominated three times before at the British Academy Awards and in his acceptance speech he said that he was absolutely honoured and humbled to receive the award. He mentioned the influence of British cinema on him as an actor and as a child. The other films that were nominated in this category were "The Martian" star Matt Damon, "Trumbo" star Bryan Cranston, "Steve Jobs" star Michael Fassbender and "The Danish Girl" star Eddie Redmayne.

Leonardo has mentioned this in his earlier speeches as well and he mentioned it again, that his role in "The Revenant" was more like a voyage and he completely submerged himself in this role. "The film was an epic piece of art and a type of film that we don't see that often coming from the Hollywood studio," said the actor in an interview post the award ceremony.

The Best Actor (female) award was won by Brie Larson for playing the role of a mother who is saving her son from the terrible reality and spends her life in a "Room". Kate Winslet took home the prize for her supporting role in the film "Steve Jobs".

However, The Revenant has completely outshone other films at the award ceremony. They have beat other strong contenders like "Bridges of Spies" and "Carol" which stood strong with nine nominations.
