Bollywood Quarterly Report: The Best Male Performances Of The Year So Far

Bollywood's Best of 2017 (so far).

As Bollywood films continue to improve in quality, we are also witnessing a rise in the level of performances given by actors working in the industry. Recent times has been a proof that actors have begun to take more risk and as a result, we have seen some remarkable roles.

And, thankfully, that trend is pretty much evident in the first three or so months of 2017.

Here are the best performances of the year so far:

    Nawazuddin Siddiqui in Haraamkhor

A film that didn't fully live up to the high expectations of many people but the performances of the two leads are one of the best of the year so far.  Nawazuddin Siddiqui, in particular, plays his morally dubious role with a sort of brilliance we have come to expect.

    Hrithik Roshan in Kaabil

In this old-fashioned revenge tale, Hrithik Roshan exactly reminded us why that he is considered among the best actors in the industry. His intense portrayal of a blind man seeking justice was easily the best part of the Sanjay Gupta film.

Akshay Kumar in Jolly LLB 2

The second installment of the Jolly LLB saga brought in Akshay Kumar to play the eponymous lawyer and it surely worked. The actor, who has a proven pedigree in dramatic and comedy roles, shone in this role that required him to do both in tandem.

    Rajkummar Rao in Trapped

Riveting survival dramas are built around a strong central performance and that is what Rajkummar Rao provided in this Vikramaditya Motwane film. The actor's committed performance will certainly be counted among the best of the year.

    Suraj Sharma in Phillauri

Yes, the film had Anushka Sharma and Diljit Dosanjh in it--both of which are talented and experienced actors. But it was Life of Pi's Suraj Sharma that really caught the attention. The actor's goofy and hilarious performance was almost unexpected and was like a breath of fresh air in a cliched role.

    Shah Rukh Khan in Raees

While there are some who think Nawazuddin Siddiqui was the real scene-stealer in the film but it was SRK's unparalleled charisma that held the narrative together. The film was a showcase for actor's dramatic heft and was another reminder of how a good an actor he can be--if he picks the right project.
