4 Bollywood Films Which Proved That English Language Has Nothing To Do With Being An Educated Indian

English and Hindi in India are more than just languages, they are a whole lifestyle within themselves. Sadly, Hindi despite being the mother tongue of millions does not qualify you for being a well-bred and educated citizen in the society the way English does. If anyone has judged you for faltering with English grammar then you probably understand what the qualification standards are!  The hysteria of not being fluent in the foreign language dwells in many but has only been the subject of scrutiny in a very few Bollywood films.

But there have been films where the villain was no particular person but the English language itself. Take a look at these Bollywood films which showed us how speaking English in some scenarios was more important than knowing how to speak!

Ramji Londonwale – A small town cook flies down to London to become a renowned chef only to learn that the man he had to work for passed away. Not knowing English or the culture he stays in hiding after he loses his passport and work illegally on the advice of a few Indians he met. He is even forced into a fake marriage with a NRI girl who finds him and his countryside ways very disturbing. He wins her over by his talent of cooking but is finally deported back to India where she follows him.

Namastey London – It’s the story of a NRI girl Jazz (Katrina Kaif) who gets married to a small town Indian guy Arjun (Akshay Kumar) and she tries everything to get rid of him because he cannot speak English and is not modern enough according to her.  He surprises her at many instances and finally by revealing that he is very fluent in English but just doesn’t show it off because of the pride he hold in his culture and language.

English Vinglish – Shashi (Sridevi) who is mother of two, is embarrassed by her husband and children for her lack of knowing English. She decides that she will not take any more of it and when she is in New York for a family wedding, she secretly enrolls of a English learning class. She surprises one and all by delivering a English on the day of the wedding and it really puts her husband and daughter to shame for mocking her. She finally finds the respect that she wasn’t getting from her own family.

Hindi Medium – The upcoming drama starring Irrfan Khan and Sana Qamar is the story of a young couple who try everything to get their daughter enrolled in a high profile English medium school. They are afraid that if they don’t do so their daughter would end up being a social misfit and have a miserable life ahead. They even act to be poor to get through the admissions process and in turn discover a life more fulfilling.

These movies have proved to be real eye openers and Hindi Medium is promising something similar! The trailer of the film has pricked a lot of curiosity with its wit and story and already has lot of high expectations on it.
