5 Bollywood Movies That Are Not Hits Despite Being In The 100 Crore Club

5 Bollywood Movies That Are Not Hits Despite Being In The 100 Crore Club

As Bollywood is becoming more and more 'organised', it is becoming more business-like. There is extensive market research, brand promotions and other processes that make films more of a consumer commodity. And with this model, inarguably, there has been a surge in how much a particular film earns. 100 crore club, which would have been unthinkable only a decade in now not only a reality but an industry standard.

Since Ghajini made history by becoming the first Indian film in 2008 to cross the 100 crore film, 50 Bollywood films have achieved that feat--and then some.

But this hullabaloo about 100 crore can be misleading as well. Of course, this trend has resulted in a rise of formulaic and crowd-pleasing films. But also, the so-called 100 crore club is not a fool-proof barometer to test the financial success of a movie as it doesn't factor in cost of the film and it doesn't project how much the film should have earned instead. Meaning, a film can still waltz in the 100 crore club and yet can be a commercial failure.

These five films are the examples of that:

    #1 Shivaay

    Domestic Gross: Rs 100.33 crore

This ambitious Ajay Devgn directorial opened opposite Karan Johar's Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. But despite earning nearly as much the romantic project, the film was a commercial disappointment as its production cost was about Rs 95 crore.

    #2 Jai Ho

    Domestic Gross: Rs 116 crore

Yes, Salman Khan scored another 100 crore film with Jai Ho. Although, the film is the actor's lowest grossing 100 crore film. The film, which cost Rs 65 crore to produce, is a failure as that figure doesn't include Salman Khan's fee which is about Rs 50 crore per film.

    #3 Ra.One

    Domestic Gross: Rs 114.29 crore

One of the biggest flops in SRK's career, Ra. One failed to rake in the kind of money the star was expecting. The film, which boasted some great visual effects and action sequences, cost a mammoth Rs. 135 crore to produce. All in all, the film really fell short of the high expectations.

    #4 Dilwale

5 Bollywood Movies That Are Not Hits Despite Being In The 100 Crore Club

    Domestic Gross: Rs 148.72 crore

Despite being considered a hit by many fans, this film was underwhelming at the box office. The film, which was directed by Rohit Shetty and had stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon, boasted a reported budget of Rs 145 crore, including marketing and promotions.

    #5 Bang Bang!

5 Bollywood Movies That Are Not Hits Despite Being In The 100 Crore Club

    Domestic Gross: Rs 181.03 crore

On the face of it, Bang Bang! is a total winner. But the Hrithik Roshan-Katrina Kaif starrer, which almost grossed nearly 200 crore, also had a budget of about Rs 140 crore, making it one of the most expensive Bollywood films of all time.
