For a female centric action drama (the category that hasn’t had the best of success rate in Bollywood), the start that Sonakshi Sinha’s Akira has taken will give some hope to its makers. Despite having taken a slow start, the film gained some pace in the evening and night shows and put up a good if not totally a solid opening day box office numbers.

Directed by A.R. Murugadoss, Akira collected 5.15 crores on its opening day. Going by the recent history of female driven dramas like Mardaani and NH10, the film has collected the highest. However, the mixed response that it’s getting its way may hamper its run in larger prospects. While the film is expected to fetch some growth today and tomorrow, an opening weekend in the range of 17-20 crores could be handy.

While the action has mostly impressed the viewers, it is Anurag Kashyap’s villainous avatar that’s taking all the praises home. Given the kind of competition it faces next week in the looks of Baar Baar Dekho and Freaky Ali, a lot would depend on how Akira holds through the week. As for the moment, the kickass action flick is struggling a little to thump its dominance at the ticket counters.
