Box Office: Hollywood Outdoes Bollywood Again As Veerappan, Phobia & Waiting Struggle For Audience

Like The Jungle Book, Civil War and Apocalypse were not enough to make Bollywood box office see enough reasons, this week’s fresh release The Angry Birds Movie rubbed in further. As surprising as it is, the Hollywood release performed better than all fresh Bollywood releases of the week that stayed quite low anyway.

With some amount of promotional effort spent on RGV’s Veerappan translated into an opening figure of 1.75 crores, the film couldn’t even touch the 6 crore mark in the weekend. Radhika Apte’s Phobia and Kalki-Naseer’s Waiting, on the other hand were dismal to say the least. Waiting despite a positive word of mouth could collect a mere 1.25* crores in its opening weekend. Phobia on the other hand with an extremely limited release and niche genre could only stay afloat in top urban plexes.

After recent Hollywood biggies outperformed Hindi movies week after week, this week’s Hollywood outing The Angry Birds Movie narrated the same story again proved out to be the top choice of cinegoers in numbers. The film with an impressive 2.20 crores on Friday multiplied its business on Saturday and Sunday and garnered a total of 9.04 crores through the weekend. The film was better than all Bollywood releases put together including Sarbjit.

With a biggie like Housefull 3 slated to release this coming Friday, while cash registers would hope for the film to do well, the Hollywood dominance may hope to take a break for a little while. Let’s see how the picture unfolds, meanwhile It’s Hollywood over Bollywood all the way.
