Here's How Bollywood Is Misleading You To Believe That Every Movie With A Part 2 Is A Sequel!

‘Sequels’ is a term that has been vogue in Bollywood since the past one decade. Every Bollywood film today that hits gold at the box office in coming back to the screens in a bigger fashion with a big bold ‘2’ at the end of it, or it might even be a ‘3’ or a ‘4’ in some cases. Whatever the case maybe, the breaking news it that Bollywood isn’t really making that many sequels.

For instance, from Housefull to Golmaal all the hit Bollywood franchise films that keeping coming back with newer story lines are not really sequels but reboots! Now if you are wondering what reboots are, these movies where the central characters remain the same but are placed in a new plot in every new film.

So what are sequels then? Sequels essentially carry forward the story line of the previous film with the same characters and pick up from where they left us stranded. Some true blue examples of Bollywood sequels can be the super hero saga Krrish, Tanu Weds Manu Returns, and Don 2. These are stories broken into parts and made into film for each part.

On the other hand prequels are those that deliver the back story to film. Incredibly rare in Bollywood, there have been only 2 in films that are back stories, Shoot Out Wadala and Naam Shabana (which is also a spinoff of Baby) are the only 2 prequels in recent times. In fact even Bahubali : The Beginning was a perfect prequel with a cliff hanger at the end that led all the insane fanfare towards Bahubali 2 which is the most successful India film today.

Bollywood has essentially been mixing it all up and marketing on the now so familiar term sequels. Many a times in fact even remakes are branded and passed off as sequels. Remakes are films that add a hint of modernity to an older storyline and present it as something refreshing and new. Remakes in Bollywood have been many like Agneepath, Tum Bin 2, and now Varun Dhawan’s Judwaa 2 will be another in the category.

Spin offs rarely ever happen in Bollywood or are even thought of even if we would love to see one. Naam Shabana that released this year was spin off of Akshay Kumar’s Baby and remains the only curious example in the category. These are films that pick out one character from the story apart from the lead and follow their story in a film of their own.

The aim branding film as a sequel, prequel, reboot and remakes is to guide the audience expectation better and lead to the theatres with a particular mindset, but Bollywood has mostly been misguiding your expectations or in fact totally remolding it by calling everything by one name.
