The maa in Bollywood never has an easy life. She has to toil hard, scrub the floors, deal with her not so lovely husband and instill good values in her children. However, in recent years, the Bollywood maa has seen a dramatic transformation. Now, she is modern, hip and younger than ever.

Let's see how has the Bollywood maa transformed over the years.

1. The Mother India

This was the impoverished and hapless mother who toiled hard to bring up her kids despite all the odds. She was considered as a goddess as she fought against all the odds to give birth to good looking heroes. Nargis, perhaps should be considered as the epitome of this category with her monologues showing her agony. 

2. The wailing mother

Her job was to shed tears whenever her sons went on a journey. These mothers can be identified from afar as they are too busy praying in temples for their sons. The wailing mothers stereotyped the mothers in reality for many years. Perhaps Jaya Bachchan in Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham best serves as an example.

3. The helpless/ waiting for badla mother

This mother had no agency of their own. She was exploited by the main villain and had to wait for her sons to grow up and avenge her. Rakhee in Karan Arjun is that mother! 'Mere paas maa hai' reinforces this category.

4. The obsessed with marriage mother

She has dreamt of marrying her children in the most extravagant way possible. She presents herself as timid and graceful and prove to be a good mother in law in the future. All of Soorja Barjatya's films have the obsessed with marriage mother.

5. The without any inhibitions mother

This mother is bold and is not afraid of making unconventional choices. She doesn't have to necessarily identify herself with her husband. She can be a single mother or a mother who has no inhibitions about her sexual desires. This type of mother paved way for future onscreen moms in Bollywood. Lilette Dubey in Kal Ho na Ho and Dimple Kapadia in Dil Chahta Hai are the bold and unafraid moms!

6. The unfiltered mother

This mother comes without any filters. She speaks whats on her mind and is not afraid of being judged. Amrita Singh in 2 States and Kirron Kher in Khoobsurat and Dostana are those sassy moms!

7. The more like a friend mother

She understands you. She empathises with you. She is  more like a friend who you can share all your worries with without being judged. These moms are the cool ones! Ratna Pathak Shah in Kapoor & Sons or Supriya Pathak in Wake up Sid serve as examples of the cool ones.

8. The young mother

This mother is young and sassy.  She is the modern mother in today's times and has redefined the role of on screen moms in Bollywood.
