IIFA Awards: Who Did and Didn't Deserve to Win?

IIFA Awards: Who Did and Didn't Deserve to Win?

FIlm awards are somewhat of a controversial subject in our country. Their morality has always been questioned i.e. whether the awards are given basis on merit or popularity; whether the deserved get the awards or the ones who have a lot of influence and fame. As a result, most of the award shows have been criticised both by the outsiders and people from within the industry.

Not to say that the buzz around award shows has reduced. They are, in fact, bigger and bigger each year. But that hasn't changed the fact that the award shows are still unreliable. Each year, there are decisions that are absolutely appalling.

After Filmfare Awards, IIFA awards are the most recognisable when it comes to honouring the best in Hindi cinema.

The annual award ceremony, now in its 17th year, took place in the gorgeous Spanish city of Madrid and the biggest names in Bollywood were in attendance. And like always, some of the decisions were confusing, to say the least.

    Here's the list of winners:

    Best Film: Bajrangi Bhaijaan

IIFA Awards: Who Did and Didn't Deserve to Win?

Undeserved: Yes, Bajrangi Bhaijaan won a National award and ruled the box-office upon its release, the film isn't better than Piku or Talvar or Bajirao Mastani.

Best Director: Sanjay Leela Bhansali for Bajirao Mastani

IIFA Awards: Who Did and Didn't Deserve to Win?

Deserved: For creating an epic with wonderful performances and breathtaking scenery.

Best Actor (Male): Ranveer Singh for Bajirao Mastani

IIFA Awards: Who Did and Didn't Deserve to Win?

Deserved: For the powerful and unflinching performance of the Marathi emperor Bajirao.

Best Actor (Female): Deepika Padukone for Piku

IIFA Awards: Who Did and Didn't Deserve to Win?

Deserved: For playing the role of a complex and volatile woman who has a unique relationship with her father.

Best Actor in Supporting Role (Male): Anil Kapoor for Dil Dhadakne Do

IIFA Awards: Who Did and Didn't Deserve to Win?

Undeserved: In a tough category, Anil Kapoor's role of a rich and urban father was the most original but he doesn't deserve the award. Masaan' Sanjay Mishra gave a performance far better than anyone on the list and wasn't even nominated!

Best Actor in Supporting Role (Female): Priyanka Chopra for Bajirao Mastani

IIFA Awards: Who Did and Didn't Deserve to Win?

Deserved: Priyanka Chopra's role of Kashibai was probably the best of her career.

Best Actor in Negative Role: Darshan Kumar for NH10

IIFA Awards: Who Did and Didn't Deserve to Win?

Deserved: Darshan Kumar was so good as the villain in NH10 that you would run away if you saw him in real llfe.

Best Performance in Comic Role: Deepak Dobriyal for Tanu Weds Manu Returns

IIFA Awards: Who Did and Didn't Deserve to Win?

Deserved: Deepak Dobriyal was hands-down the funniest man in Bollywood in 2015.

Best Debut Actor (Male): Vicky Kaushal for Masaan

IIFA Awards: Who Did and Didn't Deserve to Win?

    Deserved: Absolutely brilliant performance.

Best Debut Actor (Female): Bhumi Pednekar for Dum Laga Ke Haisha

IIFA Awards: Who Did and Didn't Deserve to Win?

Deserved: Bhumi Pednekar stole the show and our hearts with her performance in Dum Laga Ke Haisha.

Best Debut Couple: Sooraj Pancholi and Athiya Shetty for Hero

IIFA Awards: Who Did and Didn't Deserve to Win?

Okay, this is something people criticise about award shows. IIFA especially has weird tendency to have categories that really have no sense.
