When you look back in time, unless you’re a film buff, you won’t be able to tell which of Dharma’s films weren’t directed by Karan Johar. Almost every Dharma film has a stamp of Karan Johar’s creativity and looks like it is ghost directed by K Jo.

While he has a list of blockbusters in his name, there’s one movie which he really regrets passing on, which is Kal Ho Na Ho. Karan tells the reasons why he will always regret passing on this film to Nikhil Advani. From an excerpt in his book An Unsuitable Boy, here's what he has to say.

“It was hard. When I look back. I feel I should have never given anybody else the chance to direct this film. Now I would never make the mistake of writing a film and giving it to another director. Today when I write that I’m the director of this film and that film, and I don’t have Kal Ho Na Ho there, it bothers me. I just feel terrible I didn’t direct it. I don’t know why I gave it away. It should have been me all along. I deeply regret that the film does not have my name on it as director. Because in spirit, in heart, perhaps in execution, it’s completely my film,” says Karan.

He does clear that the equation between him and the Kal Ho Na Ho director has changed since then, but they’re still cordial! Karan adds, “There are two people who trained me in camera – Aditya Chopra and Nikhil Advani, even though he was my assistant. It was tough during the making of Kal Ho Na Ho, things were turbulent. It had to happen because there was an inherent conflict between the writer of the film who was on set and the director who was executing it, but more than anything else, because we had a history before that; then we rose above it. Today we are in touch and we’re friendly though we’re not friends. I know respects me and the company.”

Nikhil Advani is the same man who had a cameo in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in The Neelam Show, who tells his girlfriend Suparna that he's got another girl so she can forget him.
