Watch: Will Madhur Bhandarkar's Indu Sarkar Trailer Spark Major Political Controversy?

The Emergency is considered a dark period in the history of the nation. The citizens of the nation were stripped of their basic freedom and anarchy reigned. Even free press had been hindered. Coupled to it, the mass sterilization program proved to be the ultimate game changer for the Congress. This led to disgruntle amongst the people by large and the program became a failure.

We have, in our course of history, learnt about this period. While we generally talk about it in a matter-of-fact voice, Madhur Bhandarkar has decided to make a full fledged film on the time. Needless to say, the trailer of the film, Indu Sarkar, is politically colored and would definitely give rise to several controversies. In fact it also makes me wonder if this film could have been made if the UPA was the ruling party or if there would be some defamation case registered against the makers of ‘Indu Sarkar’ anytime soon. Would it also get into the legal muddle like Kissa Kursi Ka?

Anyway, without going much into the politics, let’s say that the trailer of Indu Sarkar takes on a controversial topic and deals with it in the classic Madhur Bhandarkar way. It shows the story of a woman who decides to revolt against the decisions of Indira Gandhi and son Sanjay Gandhi. It shows her journey from the woman who wants to be a good wife, to the woman who can go to any length to revoke the emergency.

Kirti Kulhari plays the rebel. She stammers when she talks, but her intentions and her will is rock solid.

Neil Nitin Mukesh plays Sanjay Gandhi. He is shown in Machiavellian light. Right from the emergency to the implementation of mass sterilization program, he is shown in the trailer. He looks absolutely like Indira Gandhi’s son who lost his life in the plane crash. It is great to see Neil on-screen after such a long hiatus.

Supriya Vinod plays Indira Gandhi and looks very much like the Prime Minister. She has got very few seconds in the trailer.

Bengali actor Tota Roy Chowdhury, who was last seen in the Vidya Balan starrer Kahaani 2, is playing the character of Kirti's husband in the movie. He is a staunch supporter of the Gandhi family and would not hear a word against them.
