Mirzya: The Brilliant Music And Visual Grandeur Ruined By Painfully Slow Pace!

We have had a lot of Romeo-Juliet or Heer-Ranjha and Laila-Majnu remakes over the past so many years. So much so that we know it is the story of star-crossed lovers without delving much deep into it! Well, for starters, I am not really sure how many would be able to connect to Mirza-Sahibaan folklore. But such pristine love stories have always had an appeal amongst one and all!

But sadly ,most of us are completely unaware of the love story between Mirza and Sahibaan. And sadly, Mirzya does less to let people understand it!

Mirzya traces the story of Suchi and Monish and their love! The film starts on a high note, goes great for the first 15-20 minutes and then suddenly Boom! You are sitiing there wondering if it was necessary to have such painfully slow frames! Throughout the movie it felt like someone had played the tape with half the speed!

Till intermission, there aren’t many scenes that you haven’t already seen. As you progress bit by bit, you realise how half-heartedly the trailers of the movie had been made. I mean though the second trailer was way better than the first, it is almost ditto scene by scene thing as it had been in the movie!

The story is narrated through the gypsies and the narration could have made better had the tape played at 1.5X speed. There is no suspense in the movie, as you already know what is to happen. So the way the story progressed meant everything. But that sadly was ruined, thanks to the over detailing and the pace.

The best takeaway in the film is undoubtedly the music, the brilliant cinematography and the choreography! You would love the energy and intensity in the songs and will only wish that the rest of the film too had some.

Now let’s just come to the acting part. Or maybe let’s just skip. Because Harshvardhan Kapoor, sadly, just couldn’t do it! I mean he is supposed to be an ‘anpadh’ uneducated horseman who can’t speak English. And yet, as he said all the English words, I couldn’t help but gush about the perfect pronounciation and intonations! He has the perfect set of eyes, which has been put to least use!

Saiyami Kher tries hard, but then she more often than not overdoes it. But you can see her putting efforts. Maybe she would need some more time.

Anuj Choudhry and Anjali Patil surprisingly gave a great performance. Anuj played his part pretty well as the Prince. You could see him emote perfectly the dilemma, the jealousy, and the humiliation. Anjali is the pro, who simply rocks it!

For a film that has been directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and whose script has been penned by Gulzar himself, this film is a huge disappointment. All the while you can’t help but wonder, what made Mr. Mehra so half-hearted, be it the trailers or the pace of the movie or the over obsession with the detailing instead of the film in its entirety! 

It's a 2 star from me!
