Movie Review Udta Punjab: Despite Everything That's Flawed, This Film Is A Must Watch!

If you haven't been living under a rock, you must have come across the controversy surrounding the Shahid-Alia-Kareena and Diljit Dosanjh starrer Udta Punjab and its fight with the Censor Board. That conflict garnered much publicity for the film and pushed it to a good start this weekend. However, despite mostly positive reviews, this film has etched responses mostly because of the content that it aims to bring to the public attention and individually captivating performances by Shahid, Alia, and Diljit in particular.

As mentioned earlier, the film does try to outline the serious issue of drug addiction and abuse in Punjab, one of the most prosperous states of India, and tries to highlight the police-politicians nexus in aggravating the trouble of the state. But what it doesn't focus on are the major problems that plague the youth and give rise to the rampant substance abuse. High unemployment, falling productivity and lack of educational/occupational opportunities, all of them combine together to escalate the issue at hand. 

Having said that, the film reflects an honest attempt at raising a noticeable effort and brings a horrifying story to the masses. It has its moments and the performances are great. So this film can be watched, for its content and the scintillating execution of the characters.
