There has been an uproar in the country against the rising religious intolerance and to express solidarity even the film industry has become a part of this bandwagon. The industry is currently divided into two halves: one which supports this 'selective outrage' and the other half that argues that returning an honour is not correct because other people too have worked for it.
 
The reasons why historians, artists, filmmakers and even the actors are returning their awards are as many as Dadri lynching, FTII protest, open killing of scholars and many more.
