Karan describes how he had just finished his board exams and got an offer for playing a fat boy in a TV serial Indradhanush.

Karan reached the set, waited for four hours for his turn to get his lines and things in order. He describes, “ There was a young man sitting opposite me, smoking, drinking many cups of coffee and doing a crossword. I found him familiar but couldn’t place him. I was also shy and awkward, so I didn’t look much in his direction.” Karan says that next he saw the director entering the room and this man who had been playing crossword told the director that he didn’t want to do TV. He told the director that he wanted to focus on films. Karan didn’t know how to react to this situation.

Anand, the director recognised Karan as Yash & Hiroo’s son and added, “Look at these guys, they think no end of themselves. You know this guy? He’s Shah Rukh Khan, he was in Fauji, he’s not even good looking.”

Karan writes his thoughts about this instance saying, “At face value Akshay Anand (the actor who replaced SRK in that TV show) was better looking than Shah Rukh! Anyway, what could I say?”

That was the first encounter of SRK and Karan who didn’t quite know each other back then, also without a clue that they’d become inseparable for a lifetime later.
