5 Best Films (Popular Choice) Vs 5 Best Films (Critics Choice) Of 2017

Desimartini has never endorsed the idea of critics having a say but the entire awards machinery does. As much as it’s important for a film to be viewed with just one perspective, we are all aware there are two sections in the audience that prevail. Popular choice and critic’s choice! And no matter how much you appreciate cinema, the choices in the two categories never seem to overlap each other.

So now that we are in the tail end of 2017 and have seen fairly everything that Bollywood had to offer us this year, we thought listing out movies that appealed to audiences, critics and also both. Since juries of most award ceremonies must be busy making their nominations, we once again tried helping them out with our choices of Best films that came out both in popular and critics’ categories.

So here are 5 Best Films (Popular Choice) Vs 5 Best Films (Critics Choice) that came out this year:

Popular Choice

Jolly LLB 2

One of the early releases of the year that was widely accepted by the audience was the courtroom drama starring Akshay Kumar in the lead. The Subhash Kapoor directorial had substance with ample amount of entertainment on offer.

Hindi Medium

The education comic drama that turned out to be a Box Office Super Hit must find a spot in the nomination of Best Popular Films of 2017. While it entertained bigtime with seasoned actors like Irrfan Khan and Deepak Dobriyal in the fray, its message was perhaps as strong as its intent.

Toliet: Ek Prem Katha

Another Akshay Kumar starrer that went past the 100 crore mark this year was this piece of drama. Laced with humor, emotions, romance and drama, the Shree Narayan Singh directed film got a thumbs up from the viewers.

Shubh Mangal Saavdhan

Despite being the quirky oddity this film was considering the mainstream standards of our film industry, Shubh Mangal Saavdhan worked on its merit. Besides being a box office hit, the Ayushmann Khurrana-Bhumi Pednekar starrer did what most Indian films fail to do – bring everybody together to watch something uncomfortably hilarious.

Secret Superstar

The last spot in the list should make way for this emotionally evoking drama produced by Aamir Khan. With Zaira Wasim in the lead well supported by the rest of the star cast, Secret Superstar was one of the most expressively thought stirring movie.

Critic’s Choice

Trapped

The one man show that Rajkummar Rao held on his shoulders must be seen as one of the most tension filled films ever made in India. While the film was hugely lauded by the critics, it just couldn’t find the audience it deserved.

Lipstick Under My Burkha

While it categorically placed itself in the list of successful films of 2017, this women centric drama absolutely unleashed itself at the box office. There was hardly anything wrong with the film and that makes it one of the strongest contenders to take the best film critics’ choice award next year.

Newton

While its achievements have already stamped the kind of acclaim it got, Newton is perhaps the front runner in taking the critics’ choice awards home. Once again starring Rajkummar Rao, the Amit Masurkar directorial didn’t just speak of something that needed to be told, but also said it in the way most would find endearing.

Tumhari Sulu

The Vidya Balan-Manav Kaul starring mesmerizing piece of drama could very well find a spot in the popular category as well. Going by the kind of performance the film has put at the box office, Tumhari Sulu has been able to impress both viewers and critics. Since most spots in the other category seem taken, how about a critics award jury?

Bareilly Ki Barfi

Another example of a film being enjoyed by all sections was this adorable comedy directed by Ashwini Iyer Tiwary. Without taking any cinematic liberties at all, this one seemed as original as it could get. Once again having Rajkummar Rao as one of the pillars of the film, the film does deserve some recognition. Let’s see what the juries make of it.
