Thugs of Hindostan, Fan, Kill Dil, Qaidi Band And More - Top-10 Flops Of Yash Raj Films From 2000-2008
Over the decades, Yash Raj Films has been a flag bearer in coming up with quality films. Especially in the current decade, they have given All Time Blockbusters like Sultan, Tiger Zinda Hai and Dhoom: 3 with as much panache as delivering socially relevant entertainers like Sui Dhaaga, Mardani and Dum Laga Ke Haisha. However, there have been a glaring number of flops too that are against the premium production house's name.
Though many of their films turn out to be profitable at least for them due to their strong establishment as a studio and the business model that they follow, from the high expectations perspective they have been commercial disappointments. Let's take a look at 10 such films from the current decade:
Thugs of Hindostan - Expected lifetime - 150 crore
The film was expected to be a Blockbuster at least, if not an All Time Blockbuster. Though a lot has been said about its budget (albeit with no official word yet), it is assumed to be in excess of 200 crores. No wonder, it was expected that Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan and Katrina Kaif film would do a bare minimum business of at least 300 crores, if not 400 crores. A start in excess of 50 crores on Thursday was great news too. However ever since then, it has been a steady decline for the Vijay Krishna Acharya directed film which would fold up under 150 crores.
Fan - 85 crore
Before Thugs of Hindostan, Yash Raj Films had suffered a rude shock in the form of Fan. A rare Shah Rukh Khan starrer which couldn't even get into 100 Crore Club (later the superstar suffered a bigger disaster with Jab Harry Met Sejal), this double role film was actually double trouble as it could neither gain critical acclaim not fetch commercial returns. The film turned out to be a major flop.
Kill Dil - 35 crore
A Gunday redux with lesser menacing characters, this Ranveer Singh and Ali Zafar starrer had Govinda as the antagonist and Yash Raj Films' discovery Parineeti Chopra as the leading lady. The film could neither take a good start not sustain well over a period of time. The songs couldn't do much either and the film folded up at a much lesser than expected number.
Detective Byomkesh Bakshy - 27.05 crore
There were good expectations from the film since Byomkesh Bakshy has been a legendary character, ever since tales surrounding him were first seen on TV around three decades back. Director Dibakar Banerjee tried to create a different world with this Sushant Singh Rajput starring suspense thriller but uneven narrative and inconsistency in storytelling meant audiences weren't really enthralled.
Daawat-e-Ishq - 26 crore
A light-hearted drama which brought to fore a social issue of women misusing law, this one had Aditya Roy Kapur joining Parineeti Chopra. The film had its moments but not something that kept the audiences engrossed right through the narrative. The film did try to go past the finishing line but just about fell short. It wasn't a major flop per se but did less than expectations.
Aurangzeb - 22.35 crore
The film featured Arjun Kapoor in a double role with a very strong supporting cast featuring Rishi Kapoor and Prithviraj. There were some dramatic moments galore that fetched attention but on the flip side it was too long and didn't really entertain for its entire duration. The film has accumulated a few fans over a period of time but back then had been rejected by the audiences.
Bewakoofiyaan - 14.01 crore
If the film had to release today, it would directly find a digital premier for itself. Though the cast was quite nice in the form of Ayushmann Khurranna (who was just in his starting days), Sonam Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor, this mid-budget film neither opened well nor sustained at the Box Office. It actually did the kind of business that it merited and then saw a quick halt.
Meri Pyaari Bindu - 9.59 crore
Yet another Ayushmann Khurranna starrer that didn't work quite well for Yash Raj Films, this one should have done better than how it eventually did. The film's songs (especially 'Maana Ke Hum') is played till date but theatrically audiences were just not interested in checking out this unconventional love story which featured Parineeti Chopra. It couldn't touch even 10 crore.
Bank Chor - 7.32 crore
A much-delayed film from the house of Yash Raj Films that eventually saw a token release, it was much better than what the promotion or marketing suggested. With a good set of twists and turns, especially in the last 30 minutes, this Riteish Deshmukh starrer deserved a better release and showcasing for itself. Back then though, it turned out to be one of the lowest grossers till date for Yash Raj Films.
Qaidi Band - 0.36 crore
Inarguably one of the biggest disasters ever for a newcomer film, especially when backed by a premium production house, Qaidi Band was released without any fanfare and then disappeared in a matter of just a few shows. The film fell short of even 50 lakhs mark and not many have even heard of who featured in there and when was it released. A mega disappointment.
