Spy Thriller is a genre that still needs to be worked on in Bollywood. Even though we had films like the Jewel thief and Farz back in 1967, there are very few films that have been made ever since. While the genre has gained a little pace in the past few years, it still largely remains unexplored. While some of the spy thrillers have worked phenomenally at the box-office, most of them failed to do wonders. Even though a few were well made, they were not so warmly received by the audiences. Here is a list of the top 5 Spy Thrillers based on their weekend gross:#5 BabyAkshay Kumar starrer Baby was about an undercover agent who worked for the security of the country and staked his life even though he knew that he would never be recognised if caught. Akshay gave a steller performance and along with a gripping storyline, it managed to gross almost 30 crores at the box-office.#4 RaaziMeghna Gulzar's Raazi is a gripping tale of love and sacrifice. What makes the film beautiful is how the humane touch and the proximity with reality are maintained throughout. Thanks to the earnest performances by both Alia and Vicky kaushal, the film grossed almost 33 crores on the opening weekend!#3 PhantomThe Saif Ali Khan and Katrina Kaif starrer flopped at the box-office despite collecting 33.23 crores on the opening weekend!#2 Ek Tha TigerThere's a spy-thriller with Salman and Katrina in the lead. Need we say more? Thanks to their stardom, this superhit film collected a whopping 56 crore on the first weekend.#1 Tiger Zinda HaiSalman and Katrina returned with the second part of Ek Tha Tiger and it smashed all box-office records. The film grossed 115 crore of the first weekend, thanks to the holidays around the release and Salman-Katrina magic!

Just a few days back I spoke about how Bollywood has seen some really'achche din' with back to back super successes of Tiger Zinda Hai, Padmaavat, Raid, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety and Baaghi 2. I also mentioned that the next big films are going to beRace 3 and Sanjay Dutt biopicfeaturing Ranbir Kapoor. However, it seems like the interim season would stay on to be pretty dull, what with IPL kick-starting and a couple of prominent films [Blackmail, October] already failing to get the desired results.Blackmail was expected to do at least decent business in the range of 30-40 crore. However, the Irrfan Khan starrer was rejected in its opening weekend itself and is struggling to reach even the 20 crore mark. On the other hand, October was expected to bring in 50 crores even in the worst case scenario while accounting for its offbeat and unconventional theme. However, it would be nothing short of a miracle for the Varun Dhawan film to even come close to that mark, considering its start is now making it difficult to even touch the 40 crore mark. That said, had it just been the scenario revolving around these two films, one would still have coped with that since the law of averages had to catch up sooner or later in Bollywood. However, trouble lies in the fact that weeks to come don't really have the inflow of such films which would be mega openers at the Box Office. The advent of IPL means that all big films are shying away from releasing during April and May, as a result of which small or mid-budget films with no real star value are hitting the screens one after another. This Friday would see the release of Nanu Ki Jaanu, Daas Dev and Omerta. With Abhay Deol, Rahul Bhat and Rajkummar Rao as the main leads, it would all eventually boil down to the word of mouth. 27th April would actually see no Bollywood film releasing at all.4th May has 102 Not Out arriving and though it features Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor in the lead roles, the unconventional set up means it would turn out to be a Saturday and Sunday film where audience reviews would attract footfalls more than the first-day first show numbers. There are also talks of John Abraham's Parmanu - The Story of Pokhran arriving on the same day but the promotional and marketing plans need to be much more visible to entice confidence in its eventual arrival on this date.11th May sees the arrival of Alia Bhatt's Raazi and while the promo has met with a good response and Karan Johar will pitch the film well, at the end of the day it would all boil down to the kind of content that Meghna Gulzar has put together for the film. That would be the deciding factor for how the weekend shapes up. As for the next Friday, 18th May, there is no release. However, on 25th May arrives Bhavesh Joshi Superhero. Just the teaser of this Vikramaditya Motwane film has managed to create a good impression and now all eyes are on the promo. Harshvardhan Kapoor is being seen in an altogether different avtar when compared to Mirzya and in this vigilante set up, he is bound to bring something truly exciting on screen. The film which could end up taking some sort of an opening is Veere Di Wedding which releases on 1st June. However, one waits to see how audiences warm up to the promo of this Kareena Kapoor Khan and Sonam Kapoor starrer. The week later is again vacant with no release on 8th June. This is what makes the wait much longer for 15th June since Salman Khan's mega flick Race 3 arrives on this date. While an opening in the excess of 30 crore is given for the Remo D'Souza directed film, one expects bigger frontiers to be crossed by the franchise.Still, this date is almost two months away and before that, it is quite clear that Bollywood will struggle to get even a single release to its name which would manage even a 10 crore opening day. Considering the fact that the first quarter of 2018 had been the best ever in last so many years, it is rather sad that the wait would be much longer for the 'achche din' to truly resume!

Bharat is all to kickstart really soon. The film, that was announced a month back with Ali Abbas Zafar and Salman Khan. But now the other members of the cast has also been finalised. While popular comedian Sunil Grover will be seen in an important role in the film, Bharat will also mark the comeback of Priyanka Chopra into Bollywood. In fact, it would be after some 11 odd years that Salman and Priyanka would be seen together once again! As we are all excited to have Salman and Priyanka together once again, let us look back at all the films that they have done together and their box office collection:1. Mujhse Shaadi Karogi -20041. Mujhse Shaadi Karogi -2004Salman Khan and Priyanka Chopra were paired on-screen for the first time in 2004 in Mujhse Shaadi Karogi. The film also had Akshay Kumar and Akshay and Priyanka had done quite a few films together before that. In fact, their chemistry on-screen was so fabulous that many speculated that they were dating in real life. While it was mostly Akshay-Priyanka charmed that worked for this film, the first film starring Salman and Priyanka together was a HIT. Made with a budget of 29 crores, it grossed 29 crores!2. Salaam-E-Ishq (2007)2. Salaam-E-Ishq (2007)Salman Khan and Priyanka Chopra were seen together next after 3 years in the multi-starrer Salaam-E-Ishq. It cannot be called just a Salman-Priyanka film. The film failed to connect with the audiences and it was a DISASTER. Made with a budget of 43 crores, it could only gross some 23 crores.3. God Tussi Great Ho (2008)3. God Tussi Great Ho (2008)Salman and Priyanka were next seen together in the Hindi remake of Bruce Almighty. While Salman and Priyanka were the lead in the film, Amitabh Bachchan and Sohail Khan were also in pivotal roles. This film also flopped and could only collect 12 crores while it had a budget of 21 croresWhat has changed since then? What has changed since then?Cut to 2018, the situation is quite different. Salman Khan is one of the biggest stars and all his films have a record collection for the last 5 years. In fact, except for Tubelight, all his films have been either superhit or blockbusters.Priyanka Chopra has become a global star. She has not just worked in the American TV series Quantico but has also done Hollywood films like Baywatch and Someone Like Jake. Bharat will mark her coming back into Bollywood films after 2015 release Bajirao Mastani. With her fans waiting to see her back in Bollywood, this came as a big news. The film is touted to be the potential highest grossing movie next year and we can see why!

Shoojit Sircar's October is all set to hit the theatres this Friday and there are so many reasons we are excited about this venture. After winning the hearts of the audiences with Piku the director has come back with another story and this one is really close to his heart. Starring Varun Dhawan and newcomer Banita Sandhu in a story that is about love but not a love story. Here’s what we are excepting from this seemingly different Friday release.Performances -Varun Dhawan is experimenting in this film in a big way and as it is evident from his career graph that after all the masala entertainers he has finally settled on something more subtle and subdued with October. The performance and story no doubt is creating a lot of curiosity. Varun has thoroughly researched for the role spending quite some time training in hotels and working with housekeeping. The film’s breezy appeal coupled with Varun Dhawan’s star power can create a crazy mix at the box office.Banita Sandhu’s Bollywood debut looks like she is all set to deliver then a promising performance. If you not floored seeing her in the ad of Double Mint, then her watch out for October.Shoojit Sircar's brand of cinema –The Piku director has a way of getting under your skin and making you feel the raw emotions as they should be. If you were moved by Piku and the father-daughter tale of love and attachment, then October is another film that promises a lot of surprises and is making us curious. Moreover, the life draws from an incident in his own life and that makes the film all the more special to him. From the trailer he has created a promise of many things and has already drawn us in.Cinematography and music–The film has a breezy appeal to it with an intense storyline that is enhanced by the great cinematography. October’s trailer transports you into its own world and there is something quite soothing about each frame. The music intensifies all the emotions that Shoojit Sircar wants you to feel and that is a big thing for any film to do.A story of love and not a love story –Love stories is probably the most overused theme in bollywood films. But Shoojit Sicar’s film promises otherwise. The dichotomy is enough to pull people to the theatres and explore what it means and how he has managed to differentiate the two themes. Will Varun Dhawan’s experiment with October pay off and give him his tenth Bollywood hit? We are yet to find out.

In Part I of this exclusive feature I spoke about how Bollywood is back on track with back to back successes of Tiger Zinda Hai, Padmaavat, Baaghi 2, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, Raid and PadMan that allowed over 900 crore to come in. In this second (and concluding) part of the feature, let's look at how things are expected to be at least reasonably good in the second quarter of the year as well.Yes, one fact that cannot be ignored is that the influx of biggies between April to June would be much lesser in comparison. Prime reason for that is IPL due to which major big budget films typically shy away from arriving. That said, many of the upcoming releases are interesting for sure. The one that is catching eyeballs already is Blackmail. Considering the fact that it has director Abhinay Deo in good form after Delhi Belly with quirky humor to offer, audiences have something exciting to catch in theaters. Moreover, the name Irrfan Khan by itself promises humor of a different kind that should be lapped up the patrons. Then there is October which is Varun Dhawan's tenth release and inarguably his most unusual as well. The youngster has been delivering one major success after another and if this Shoojit Sircar film works well with the audience as well, Varun would indeed have a lot to celebrate.Another film that promises good footfalls is Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor's 102 Not Out. Director Umesh Shukla has got the best of the veterans from the industry in a single frame and it looks highly unlikely that there won't be magic on screen. The promo has already set the stage for an unusual entertainer and since this is indeed a father-son story with a difference, there is good curiosity already. As for Parmanu - The Story of Pokhran, the film may currently be in news due to all the wrong reasons but all said and done there should be right reasons opening up soon enough when the promo arrives. John Abraham has explored similar topical genre before too in Madras Cafe and hopefully the story would be repeated with Parmanu as well.Meanwhile, one waits to see what do Karan Johar and Meghna Gulzar have in the offering for Raazi. There isn't much that has been revealed about the film when it comes to the core plot, though what one knows is that the Alia Bhatt starrer is set in Kashmir. This one is expected to be a sensitive film that should touch heartstrings. On the other hand Veerey Ki Wedding should bring on smiles, what with Kareena Kapoor Khan and Sonam Kapoor pairing up for the latter's home production. A celebration film that should keep the 'dhols' and 'baaraatis' engaged, Veerey Ki Wedding is made by the director of Sonam's Khoobsoorat, Shashanka Ghosh, with Ekta Kapoor backing it up.While one hopes that most of the aforementioned films work well at the Box Office, the ones that should bring in big bucks are Race 3 and Sanjay Dutt biopic, both of which release within a space of 15 days in June. Now these are the biggies on which a lot is riding and mega bucks are expected to flow in as well once they open in theaters.Salman Khan has already shown that when it comes to hardcore action and thrills, there is no one better than him to bring on the masses. That has already happened with Tiger Zinda Hai just a few months back and nothing less is expected from Race 3 either. As a franchise, Race is huge and now that it has become even bigger and better with an ensemble of starcast, it is set to be a huge Eid entertainer. On the other hand even though the wait has been rather too long for the Sanjay Dutt biopic to hit the screens, hopefully it would indeed happen on 29th June once the release date is met. With Raj Kumar Hirani calling the shots and Ranbir Kapoor playing the title role, the stage has already been set. One waits eagerly with bated breath to check out the First Look of the film as that would decide how big it is actually.Between just these two films, at least 500 crore is expected. As for the other releases, even if just 200 crore more coming in, the quarter would be richer by at least 700 crore that would keep the money ball moving in 2018.

'Achche din' are indeed here forBollywood! It was a pretty depressing picture though somewhere around the middle of last year. Biggest of the films were not doing well at the Box Office, be it Tubelight or Jab Harry Met Sejal. As a matter of fact, some well-made entertainers too couldn't find audiences, case in point being Mubaarakan. Suddenly it had started seeming that audiences were shying away from entering theaters.Yes, things improved with back to back successes of Golmaal Again and Judwaa 2 in the last quarter of the year. Fukrey Returns came as a respite as well. Still, the need of the hour was not just sporadic successes but something that was far more consistent.Thankfully, that change begun with Tiger Zinda Hai which was the last major release of 2017 that spilled over went into 2018. From here, there was no looking back as practically very biggie (as well much certain smaller films) have turned out to be successful too.No wonder, as much as 900 crore have been gathered in just three months so far, something that has never been done before. It can well be gauged by the fact that in the similar time period [January to March], 2017 had seen 650 crore coming in whereas 2016 had seen even lesser with just 550 crore being gathered at the Box Office.Of course, as much as 150 crore have come in from Tiger Zinda Hai itself in the first month of 2018. However, triple century by Padmaavat followed by the century run of Baaghi 2 as well as Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety has kept the ball rolling forBollywood. Raid too has approached the 100 crore mark while PadMan went on to cross 80 crore in theaters.Meanwhile, smaller films have done well too. Hichki is in the vicinity of 40 crore already, hence turning out to be a clean Hit. This isn't all as smaller films made in controlled budget [Pari, Hate Story IV] managed recovery as well. The only film that came with good anticipation but failed badly at the Box Office is Aiyaary. One hoped a total of at least 50 crore from the film but the end result was very poor with not even 20 crore coming in. That said, compared to last year when several much anticipated films turned out to be copper at the Box Office, 2018 has been far better with a success ratio that is remarkably higher. So what has really brought back audiences in theaters? Well, first and foremost each and every film that has done well is due to the fact that it has been well made and did its job when it came to entertaining the audience. Different genres of films [action thriller, historical drama, desi masala, romcom and realistic drama] have managed to keep audiences engaged as they have continued to get varied entertainment film after film. Moreover, as is always the case, good entertainment always manages to entice audiences enough to keep coming back to theaters whereas disappointments pull them away. When that happens, audiences don't mind coming back to theaters every second week. This is what has allowed the Box office counter to keep ticking as well.(To be continued in Part 2 where we talk about what lies ahead next)

2018 looks like one of the most promising years for Bollywood. The reason is simple- the Box Office collection that Bollywood has registered in the first quarter of the year is commendable. In fact, the total number of Bollywood films that entered the 100 crore club last year is the same as the number of 100 crore club films in the very first quarter this year! Also see:The youngest celebs to make it to the 100 crore clubYes, you read that right. But this year, within the span of just 3 months, we have 4 100 crore films.Let us have a look at the Bollywood films that made it 100 crore club in the first quarter of 2018 and the days they took to make this collection.1. Padmaavat - 5 days:Padmaavat was the first film to enter the 100 crore club this year. Even though the film was not released initially in a few states, it zoomed to 100 crores in the opening weekend itself. It took the film 5 days to mint 100 crores!2. Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety - 25 daysThe Luv Ranjan film, starring Kartik Aryan, Nushrat Bharucha and Sunny Singh was the surprise entry to the 100 crore club. It reached the mark in 25 days and registered itself as a super hit.3. With just his fifth film,Tiger Shroffhas emerged as one of the youngest stars to join the100 Crore Club.Baaghi 2has comfortably gone past the century mark and with this Tiger has joined the ranks of young stars likeRanveer Singh,Varun Dhawan,Arjun Kapoor,Sidharth Malhotra,Sushant Singh RajputandKartik Aryanwho have a 100 Crore Club film to their name."It was always on the cards for Tiger and as a matter of fact it could well have been a bit earlier too," says a trade veteran, "After scoring half a century with his debut filmHeropanti, he went ahead and scored an even bigger success with Baaghi. However, things didn't fall into place well for him withA Flying JattandMunna Michaelwhich gave him a jolt. However, all is well that ends well as he has now bounced back in a major way with Baaghi 2. The film is a bonafide Superhit already and we could well be looking at a Blockbuster here for Tiger."With many of his peers already in the 100 Crore Club, Tiger now has some sort of burden off his shoulders when it comes to scoring a biggie as well.He continues, "Ranveer Singh and Varun Dhawan are in a different zone altogether though since former has scored big in numbers whereas latter has been most consistent. Ranveer has three centuries to his name, each withSanjay Leela Bhansali[Ram Leela,Bajirao Mastani,Padmaavat] whereas Varun Dhawan four already [ABCD - Any Body Can Dance 2,Judwaa 2,Badrinath Ki DulhaniaandDilwale].""Then there is Arjun Kapoor with one century [2 States] and Sidharth Malhotra follows too with one [Ek Villain]. Sushant Singh Rajput too has scored a big one withMS Dhoni - The Untold Storywhile Kartik Aryan has just opened his account withSonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety," he adds.Incidentally, each of the biggies scored by Tiger has been with producer Sajid Nadiadwala."After giving him a break with Heropanti, Sajid has been investing on the youngster on a consistent basis with films like Baaghi and Baaghi 2. In fact he has also announced his plans for Baaghi 3. He is a huge influencer when it comes to directing Tiger's career in the right direction," a close associate adds. Now one waits to see how big do the otherfilms starring Tiger Shroffturn out to be in time to come."He has a biggie lined up later this year in the form ofStudent of the Year 2," says an industry insider, "Then there is Rambo and also the film where he is joining hands withHrithik Roshan. Action would play a major role in each of these films."The stage has been set for Tiger Shroff already and now it is a matter of time before he starts scoring even bigger and matter.
