Recently Farhan Akhtar and the makers of Lucknow Central revealed how they were asked to build a controversy in order to market the film and they decided against it. But Lucknow Central makers may have been an exception but many movie makers have used the air created by controversies to push their films. Recall how celebrity controversies become a huge matter of debate when their films are around and just die out after the film’s release like they never existed.

But this year has been unique in many ways. Even after taking the necessary mileage from controversies many popular films have failed to take off at the box office. Be it Rangoon releasing after the nepotism debate or Simran building up on the Hrithik Kangana controversy these films have been the biggest duds of 2017 take a look.

The Vishal Bharadwaj film was a period drama starring Kangana Ranaut, Shahid Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan while the buzz around the film took its time building up, but what took off was Kangana Ranaut kicking off a nepotism debate on Karan Johar’s Koffee With Karan. With the whole industry discussing and debating, the film yet failed to take off at the box office.

    Raabta

This film built on a cliché controversy a long while before its release. With the lead actor Sushant Singh Rajput breaking up with his girlfriend Ankita Lokhande, relationship rumors with his Raabta co star Kriti Sanon started building and she was even blamed for Sushant’s break up. But after the film released and flopped the rumors died once in for all.

Be it Ranbir Kapoor mansplain Katrina Kaif’s sentences in an interview and not letting her speak for herself, or be it Govinda’s cameo being chopped off from the film and the matter being blown out of proportion, none of the pre release controversies  failed to help the film recover its exorbitant budget at the box office.

    Indu Sarkar

The film based on the emergency era was drawn into the controversial bracket since the release of its trailer as the Congress Party alleged that the film tried to show the former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Sanjay Gandhi in a bad light. Despite all the necessary hype around the film it failed to impress the audiences and did not earn big at the box office.

    Simran

Kangana Ranaut reopened a sore subject on Aap Ki Adalat by taking a dig on Hrithik Roshan and her alleged relationship she had with him. She did not stop there and even recorded a ‘feminist’ song with AIB. With Aditya Pancholi getting dragged into the debut things just got mucky. But sadly it did not help her get her solo win at the box office and Kangana mysterious stopped talking after the film released.

    Tubelight

Salman Khan was before this taken for a grill when her made an insensitive rape comment before the release of Sultan. Something similar happened when he was asked about his opion on wars since his film Tubelight was based on the Indo China war. His statement was "Those people who order war, they should be given guns and made to fight. Within a day, all conflicts will get over as their legs will start shaking." This was taken to be a dig on national interest with the ongoing tension with Pakistan. The film still failed to appeal the fans.

If the era of controversies giving mileage to Bollywood films is getting over we certainly couldn’t be happier.
