'Achche din' are indeed here for Bollywood!

It was a pretty depressing picture though somewhere around the middle of last year. Biggest of the films were not doing well at the Box Office, be it Tubelight or Jab Harry Met Sejal. As a matter of fact, some well-made entertainers too couldn't find audiences, case in point being Mubaarakan. Suddenly it had started seeming that audiences were shying away from entering theaters.

Yes, things improved with back to back successes of Golmaal Again and Judwaa 2 in the last quarter of the year. Fukrey Returns came as a respite as well. Still, the need of the hour was not just sporadic successes but something that was far more consistent.

Thankfully, that change begun with Tiger Zinda Hai which was the last major release of 2017 that spilled over went into 2018. From here, there was no looking back as practically very biggie (as well much certain smaller films) have turned out to be successful too.

No wonder, as much as 900 crore have been gathered in just three months so far, something that has never been done before. It can well be gauged by the fact that in the similar time period [January to March], 2017 had seen 650 crore coming in whereas 2016 had seen even lesser with just 550 crore being gathered at the Box Office.

Of course, as much as 150 crore have come in from Tiger Zinda Hai itself in the first month of 2018. However, triple century by Padmaavat followed by the century run of Baaghi 2 as well as Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety has kept the ball rolling for Bollywood. Raid too has approached the 100 crore mark while PadMan went on to cross 80 crore in theaters.

Meanwhile, smaller films have done well too. Hichki is in the vicinity of 40 crore already, hence turning out to be a clean Hit. This isn't all as smaller films made in controlled budget [ Pari , Hate Story IV] managed recovery as well.

The only film that came with good anticipation but failed badly at the Box Office is Aiyaary . One hoped a total of at least 50 crore from the film but the end result was very poor with not even 20 crore coming in. That said, compared to last year when several much anticipated films turned out to be copper at the Box Office, 2018 has been far better with a success ratio that is remarkably higher.

So what has really brought back audiences in theaters? Well, first and foremost each and every film that has done well is due to the fact that it has been well made and did its job when it came to entertaining the audience. Different genres of films [action thriller, historical drama, desi masala, romcom and realistic drama] have managed to keep audiences engaged as they have continued to get varied entertainment film after film.

Moreover, as is always the case, good entertainment always manages to entice audiences enough to keep coming back to theaters whereas disappointments pull them away. When that happens, audiences don't mind coming back to theaters every second week. This is what has allowed the Box office counter to keep ticking as well.
