    Diwali is one of the biggest festivals in India and therefore there are no points for guessing why it is also the one most sought after holidays for Bollywood film releases. There are several films that released on Diwali and proved to be the biggest hits of their respective years.

    But as they say, all that glitters is not gold. Diwali may be one of the biggest and the most sought-after occasions to schedule a Bollywood release, but it hasn’t given Bollywood the biggest hit of the year in this decade except for the year 2007 when Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone’s Om Shanti Om released.

    All the other years, it has either been Eid releases of Salman Khan or Christmas releases that have always been the winners at Bollywood box office. To prove our point take a look at the highest grossing films of each year in the decade in comparison to the Diwali releases.


    2008 – Aamir Khan’s Ghajini which also happens to be Bollywood’s first 100 crore film released on Christmas 2008 and was the biggest grosser. On the other hand Ajay Devgn’s second installment of the Golmaal franchise, Golmaal Returns, that released on Diwali earned nearly half of Ghajini’s collection.

    2009 - 3 Idiots shattered a lot of records when it released on Christmas 2009 and stayed at top of the box office game for a long time. The film starred Aamir Khan, R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi and Kareena Kapoor. While the Diwali releases this particular year including All The Best, Main Aur Mrs. Charles and Blue were all major flops.

    2010 – Salman Khan’s Dabangg released on Eid in September 2010. The film was a blockbuster and earned 141 crores at the box office. On the other hand, the big Diwali release of the year which was Ajay Devgn’s Golmaal 3 was a close second earning 108 crores at the box office.

    2011 – Bodyguard, another of Salman’s big Eid releases made the audiences go crazy and it turned out to be the highest grosser of 2011. Shah Rukh Khan’s ambitious superhero  Diwali release Ra.One did moderately well and was the third highest grosser of that year.

    2012 –This was another year where Salman Khan and his Eid release emerged victorious. Ek Tha Tiger released and created new records at the box office. On the other hand, Shah Rukh Khan and his Diwali release Jab Tak Hai Jaan which was also Yash Chopra’s last directorial project was the seventh highest grosser of that year.

    2013 – Krrish 3 was a Diwali blockbuster but however the year had many more big releases lined up pushing it to be the fourth highest grosser of the year. This year Christmas boosted of the highest grosser with Doom 3 releasing a weekend before the festival.

    2014 – Aamir Khan again stole the show again releasing PK the weekend before Christmas. The film shattered all the previously held records at the box office. Shah Rukh Khan who again released his film Happy New Year on Diwali was the third highest grossing film of 2014.

    2015 – Both on Eid and Diwali this particular year was Salman Khan with Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo respectively. His Eid release  Bajrangi Bhaijaan, however, championed over his Diwali release to be the highest grosser of the year, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo being the second highest.

    2016 – With a major Diwali clash between Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Shivaay pulling down both the films’ collections, it was Aamir Khan’s Danagl that stole the show and has created the biggest record for Bollywood that seem impossible to break.

    With nine consecutive years of the decade of not producing the highest grosser of the year, the filmmakers must know which festival to eye in the coming years. It is still to be seen though if Ajay Devgn’s Golmaal gain of Aamir Khan’s Secret Superstar change the Diwali graph for the better.
