When was the last time in your living memory do you remember three films releasing on box-office on a Friday, all of them with popular stars and all of them tanked at the box-office on such a dismal level? Well, if your living memory is anything like ours then you must be racking your brain just the way we are.

It is truly shocking that this Friday has been one of the most dismal ones even after having three films at the box-office. The occupancy rate of the film put together in this weekend has been close to 10-15% which is really unexpected.  One might argue that the clash of three films must have been the reason behind the dismal number, but come to think of it with the kind of audience base that we have this should not have been a problem. There are ample examples of two or three films clashing at the box-office and at least one or two of them doing decent business.

Additionally, it is also to be noted that the three films that released this Friday were as different as each other as they could be. Mulk was a court-room drama, Fanney Khan was about a man who wants to see his daughter become a famous singer and Karwaan was a road trip film where three quirky characters embark on a crazy journey of self-realization. There can be no reason why none of them worked at the box-office.

What even more shocking is the fact that the films included some of the most sought-after stars like Aishwarya Rai, Anil Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, Rishi Kapoor, Tapsee Pannu and Karwaan marked the Hindu debut of Malayalam superstar Dulquer Salman and YouTube’s darling Mithila Palkar.

Although it is disappointing to compare such numbers, one would expect Fanney Khan to do better of the lot due to its star value, however, after the first weekend, it is actually Karwaan with no really big star or glam factor that is ahead in the race of now.

Is this reminder that Bollywood needs to try harder or is it just a reminder of how the rules in Bollywood are changing, only time will tell.
