Bollywood report card - Aiyaary, Blackmail, Bhavesh Joshi Superhero, Kaalakaandi are the biggest flops in the first half of 2018

First half of 2018 has come to a close and by and large it has been a very good year so far. Barring a very few films, every other medium or budget film has turned out to be successful. Flops and disasters have been much lesser if one compares with the years gone by. As a matter of fact most of the films that didn't do well were the ones that were delayed for a while.

Let's take a look at 10 lowest grossing films of the year (that had some credentials at least to boast of) along with their lifetime numbers:

     Blackmail - 20.35 crore

The promo of this black comedy was actually quite interesting. It seemed that the Irrfan Khan, Kirti Kulhari and Arunoday Singh starrer would turn out to be an engaging entertainer. However that didn't really turn out to be the case as the overall narrative turned out to be a tad wayward even though it started reasonably well. Result? The film couldn't really cover the distance and disappeared soon enough.

     Aiyaary - 18.22 crore

This one turned out to be a mighty disappointment. Neeraj Pandey's name spells class and with the coming together of Manoj Bajpayee and Sidharth Malhotra, one waited for yet another intriguing thriller from the director. However, the film was delayed by a few weeks and when it released, there wasn't much of a hype or buzz going for it. An expensive affair, it was a non-starter and it nosedived pretty soon too.

     Mukkabaaz - 10.51 crore

Though Anurag Kashyap hasn't really delivered any major money-spinner till date, his films do make some noise en route release. Same was the case with Mukkabaaz as well, more so since it also had Aanand L. Rai collaborating with him. Newcomer Vineet Kumar Singh was in news as well for his newfound boxing skills. However the audiences were not really interested and that was evidenced in quick folding up of film.

     Kaalakaandi - 6.34 crore

Saif Ali Khan's Kaalakaandi was completed long time back and at one point in time there were talks about the film seeing a direct release on the digital medium. That would actually have been the right decision too since the film could hardly collect anything at the Box Office. There was additional spent on the film's marketing and prints, all of which could have been saved had it not seen a theatrical release at all.

Nanu Ki Jaanu - 4.12 crore

This Abhay Deol film came out of nowhere and was just not the kind of horror-comedy that one would have expected from the actor. A weird film that started at one point, took a turn at another and then ended up somewhere else, Nanu Ki Jaanu was a horror show for its distributors and exhibitors. The film gained no traction whatsoever and emerged as a complete disappointment commercially.

     Omerta - 3.56 crore

Given the fact that Rajkummar Rao had delivered a surprise success with Newton last year, one expected a repeat of it with Omerta. Since Hansal Mehta was at the helm of affairs, there were talks about this being an explosive affair in the offering. Surprisingly though there was hardly any promotion or marketing for the film and hence when it released in theaters, it was totally unannounced. Result? A massive flop.

Welcome To New York - 2.38 crore

With names like Karan Johar, Riteish Deshmukh, Sonakshi Sinha and Diljit Dosanjh associated with the film, one expected Welcome To New York to be a roller coaster ride. Moreover, the film was also in news due to the cameo appearance of Salman Khan. Audiences though sniffed the fact that this so-called comedy won't really be offering much from an entertainment quotient perspective and chose to stay away.

     Daas Dev - 1.5 crore

A much delayed film, this political thriller drama affair by director Sudhir Mishra was a modern take on Devdas. There were talks about the film's release for quite some time but when it did eventually arrive, there was just a token release. Starring Rahul Bhatt, Richa Chaddha and Aditi Rao Hydari in key roles, Daas Dev just came and went, and now one waits to see its eventual arrival on the digital medium.

Bhavesh Joshi Superhero - 1.46 crore

Vikramaditya Motwane had carried the dream of Bhavesh Joshi Superhero for last so years, and there were many actors who were in consideration. Ultimately Harshvardhan Kapoor stepped in as the central protagonist and the promotion was decent as well. Audiences though didn't really care much and as a matter of fact chose to watch Sonam Kapoor's Veere Di Wedding which had released on the same day.

     Dil Juunglee - 1.30 crore

A delayed affair, the film had Taapsee Pannu as the star attraction. The film featured Saqib Saleem in the lead who was recently seen as Salman Khan's younger brother in Race 3. There was hardly any promotion surrounding the film and though the makers did try to bring on some pace around the release, it wasn't to much avail. The film ended up joining the list of Taapsee's non-starters like Running Shaadi.
