Golmaal Again Vs Secret Superstar: You Won't Believe Which Film Has An Edge Over The Other!

For Bollywood, the Diwali season is a guarantee of success. Most of the films released around Diwali in recent years have met with commercial success. The trend more or less continued even if two big ticket films released together.

Once again, two highly publicised films are clashing at the box office this year. While Aamir Khan’s Secret Superstar is releasing on October 19, Ajay Devgn’s Golmaal Again will hit the screens the next day.

The reviews of Secret Superstar are already out and it seems the film will catch the audience’s fancy on its first day. The makers of Golmaal Again will wait till October 20 to figure out the audience’s mood.

In the meantime, we have tried to compare the pre-release buzz of both the films. Of course, Secret Superstar has an edge here because its reviews are already out and people are reading them through various channels, but that alone isn’t the reason for its popularity.

Actually, we compared the trending data of both the films and by the afternoon of October 18, Secret Superstar appeared ahead of Golmaal Again. These screenshots were taken at 3:45 PM on Wednesday.

In this, we compared the search interest in both the films since the last seven days. The blue line represents Secret Superstar and the red line represents Golmaal Again.

We then broke it down to the last one day. Secret Superstar was still ahead of Golmaal Again.

Interestingly, Secret Superstar is one of the top searches in Nepal. That shows how Aamir Khan’s brand image influences a film’s business in the key overseas markets. That way, Secret Superstar is likely to work well in sizeable markets like Nepal and UAE.

These two graphs show how piracy has become a big problem for Bollywood films. The first related query on Golmaal Again is ‘Golmaal Again download’. The makers need to take care of the rogue cinema halls.

Big or small, piracy can hamper any film’s business.

This is the expected viewing pattern of the audience throughout India. You can see how Golmaal Again (Red) dominates the central India, while Secret Superstar is likely to gain big in rest of India (Blue).

However, it’s not easy to write off Golmaal Again just now, because it’s a set franchise with a dedicated audience base. Over the years, all Golmaal films have made good money at the box office.

While Golmaal Fun Unlimited (2006) earned approximately Rs 30 crore, the second film in the series, Golmaal Returns, registered a business of Rs 51 crore. Golmaal 3 hit the screens in 2010 and earned more than Rs 108 crore.

Also, Golmaal Again has been allotted more screens than Secret Superstar to begin with and that will also make a difference in their total collection.

Both the films have different target audiences and that may make a difference as well. Bollywood doesn’t have a history of many successful children films. On the other hand, Golmaal may catch the festive flavour.

A clear picture will emerge only after a week of the release of these films.
